It's been six years now, and tea just doesn't cut it. I've tried a couple of times to start drinking coffee again but it makes my insides feel so dirty and toxic that after a couple of sips I don't want anymore and I go looking for some water to clean myself out. But when I drank it there was something both comforting and luxurious about a good cup. It made anything I was doing, driving, reading, talking to a friend, a little bit better. It was a special treat that I got every day. Tea's just not the same. Sigh. Don't anybody quit -- you may not be able to go back, and life really is better with coffee.
I quit all caffeine, including coffee for a year, then I took a job which required me to be mentally sharp at 3 in the afternoon, and at 43, I discovered that can't do that without drugs.
In the coffee-free time, I drank peppermint tea and mourned the loss of comfort I got from coffee. The one drink that I found that came close in terms of feeling like coffee was "rooibos", which is some sort of african plant ground up. It didn't replace coffee, but it did come close, and now in my coffee-enabled times, I still occaisionally have a a cup of rooibos.
It also makes an excellent chai.
