I'm on the fourth floor, with a view of both the harbor and the bay. The bay view is largely blocked by a giant oil drilling rig being built, but that's a pretty interesting process to watch so I don't resent it. And I can still see fishing boats coming and going through the gaps between the legs of the platform. The other window gives me a nice long view of a marina with a bunch of pleasure boats, and some islands. A couple of weeks ago there was a fantastic double rainbow moving slowly out from town toward the islands, and kind of rising from the water into the sky as it moved. I was on the phone with a lawyer and just stopped him midsentence and told him to look at the rainbow. He either didn't have a window or didn't have a view so was nonplussed.
In the foreground of my left hand window are the rooftops of a couple of buildings -- one a restaurant with some offices, the other a meat processing plant. The meat processing plant is a fascinating tangle of tubes and valves and staircases and scaffolding, and there is ALWAYS someone walking around on the roof. I think every day people are doing something on the roof -- welding vents, lowering things down the side of the building, just standing around smoking. So it's fun to watch. Although the office building just has a couple of vents, it is a favorite landing spot for seagulls, and this spring and summer I watched a family of seagulls hatch and learn to fly. Now the little guys are grown to full size (although they're still grey-brown all over instead of white with grey wings). Right now the rooftop is deserted, but more often there are a couple of seagulls fighting with one another right in my line of sight. To tell you the truth, I spend more time watching the birds and the action on the hot dog factory than I do gazing at the tranquil water and boats.
