Dad's entered the flying fish zone of the Atlantic:
hi all, at about 1300 utc anthem passed the theoretical halfway point of our trip, just a few hours over seven days of sailing. still rolling monotonously east in 15-20 kts ese wind. sea life in the last 24 hours - one petrel, one shearwater, but shoals of flying fish bursting from the waves like silver darts as we pass and banking away (three met their demise on deck last night) - it is a wet desert out here. but the moon is waxing and should be full for our arrival in st. lucia. love, w
I think(?) he meant to say still rolling monotonously WEST because in a later email the spinnaker is still up, and if they were going East in East-South-East breeze it would be difficult, ugly sailing, beating into the wind with genoa and mainsail, anything but monotonous. And they would be heading in the wrong direction.
He also expends precious keystrokes (they pay by the character on these text messages) to send me this:
hi sher all well. reading 'about schmidt', in which louis begley sez bankruptcy litigation is "the domain of loudmouth, oveweight, overdressed lawyers". thinking of you with affection, I thought you'd want to know for self defense. love, dad
I'm surely not overdressed, I'm certain of that.... Tomorrow I'm heading to California to hang out with a whole slew of overweight loudmouths in the land where golf is king; a strange thing to look forward to, for sure, and yet, I'm excited.
