I was visiting the blog Outer Life, where I noticed my blog listed right below Virginia Postrel's. I thought, "that's wierd" and then realized the order is alphabetical, which makes it a little less wierd. But I still think it's kind of funny.
I've been beside Virginia Postrel in real life before, driving her around, at a Pop!Tech in the distant past. (She wouldn't remember, which is perhaps one of the reasons I'm disinclined to be impressed with her.) I thought she'd be really interesting and cool. I didn't find her to be, particularly. And I've read her stuff, and heard her speak, a couple of times now, and am still waiting to discover why she is so widely admired. She travels all around the country, getting paid to speak and write about these "penetrating insights" that just don't strike me as either one. I mean, she's obviously intelligent, but she doesn't rank among the thought leaders, of all political and academic stripes, that I've been exposed to. Somehow, despite my underwhelm, she seems to be making a go in that role.
How do I get a gig like that? Maybe the Outer Life blogroll is the first step. Watch this space for a link to my speaker's bureau, coming right up.
[UPDATE: Outer Life is now threatening to separate Virginia and I if we can't get along. He's looking for someone to insert in the blogroll between us to spare everyone the inevitable scene: broken china, thrown food, shrieking, clawing and scratching, etc. if I don't settle down. The buffer blog will need to gracefully fall between "Postrel" and "Stay" -- alphabetically if not in temperament. I am certain that the two gentlemen on my blogroll who fit the bill, Professor Bainbridge or Schteino, as would "Rickey, Anthony"would be up to the task, but you can submit your own suggestions here. I'll try to be nice in the meantime, and will cozy up to Strange Women Lying in Ponds instead.]
