If you're in Phoenix on Sunday look for the two blonde girls striding along steadfastly at a brisk walk and shout your lungs out for us.
Haven't figured out the race outfit yet but it is currently planned to include shorts, a T shirt, a long sleeve shirt, and a throwaway windbreaker -- to be discarded along the course if not needed. Also, probably a water bottle holder so we don't need to stop if a water station is particularly crowded. And visors. And our mascots -- a stuffed Beanie-baby sized Big Bird and a stuffed character apparently called The Tick. We found these little guys discarded along the roadside on various long walks, probably thrown from the backseats of cars by toddlers. I will probably have The Tick although we haven't yet worked out who's going with whom. Maybe we'll trade halfway. I'm hoping to rig up some way to have Big Bird on my visor.
Housemate went to Goodwill to get our throwaway windbreakers. She was hoping to get something that said something like "Elks Lodge Basketball Challenge 1987" but didn't find anything like that. So she got really shiny almost iridescent warm up suit tops -- one in a bright teal-green and one in a vivid purple. You won't be able to miss us.
We've also got some stick on letters so we can write our names on our shirts so the cheerleading squads can cheer us on personally. Although I don't think I'll challenge them with "Scheherazade."
I've done two marathons, and here are a few things I wish I had known ahead of time:
1. If your bottle is short, you can fill up directly from their supply -- much faster! But if the bottle is too tall, it doesn't always fit. Also, along those lines, water stations DO run out of water. Happened to me a few times.
2. Get chapstick with sunscreen, carry it, and repeatedly apply it. I recommend Chapstick Ultra (30 SPF), but ymmv.
3. If you haven't trained with Gatorade, don't drink the stuff. I did, and threw it all up after finishing the marathon, which was absolutely disgusting.
Best of luck to you -- you'll do great!
