Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm feeling a little cowed by my visitor numbers which have just taken a double barrelled jump because of some simultaneous fortuitous linking from higher up the blog food chain. (Good heavens, has someone posted a link to my ranting about law school grades on Amazon? If you came here from there, please tell me about it....)
Strangers, welcome. I am a single female lawyer, two and a half years out of an undistinguished law school, living and working in Portland, Maine. I am not as smart as the people who recommended you to me. Just so we have that clear. Nor am I a laugh riot. As for the old adage, "Small minds talk about people, mediocre minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas," well, you'll find me squarely in the small minds camp; I'm generally uninterested in events, mildly interested in ideas, and fascinated by people. Chiefly, me. I don't even know where on the heirarchy talking about stuff like the cardinal I saw in the tree this morning or going on a long walk falls but I expect it's not high on that scale, and postings on both are likely forthcoming.
Anyway, notwithstanding all these disclaimers I am fortunate to have some readers who have become friends (and more I'm hoping will) and maybe if you like it you'll become one, or maybe become friends with one of them through hanging out here.
One thing that's been really nice for me is that people talk back. I don't mind having a lot of visitors, if you don't mind that I've got nothing in particular to teach you here. But it's decidedly not my goal to move up Clay Shirky's distribution curve so that this becomes a broadcast rather than a conversation. I've loved it when people who read chime in and tell me who they are and what they think. It's how I've made the aforementioned friends and is the best part about all this. So if you're dropping by more than once, say hello.
Hello! :)
I'm originally from southern NH, not too far from where you are currently (and I wholeheartedly love Portland) but am doing time in law school in upstate NY right now. I've been lurking in your blogosphere for a few months now.

I'm not a lawyer but worked in law firms years ago. Law fascinates me. I read you all the time :-) I like seeing the human side of professionals too so writing about people, birds, anything, is always interesting. :-)

Hi S. For the record, the quotation is attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt and was, "Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people."
Not as smart my a.....er....well, you know.
very best,

You asked for people to chime in if we've been reading, so here I am, chiming. As a 1L, I really enjoy your writing--not only because it reassures me that there is life after law school and life in the law, but also because you write lyrically and I enjoy your reflections. (And I was so crushed for you about the food-poisoning thing!) Thanks for giving me many entertaining moments.

Hi Scheherazade, long time listener, first time caller. ;-)
The increase in visitors is well deserved.

OK. I resent the undistiguished law school thing. ;)

Howdy! I've been ready you almost daily for a few months, guess it's time to introduce myself! I'm applying for law school, live in Austin, TX. I love your blog!

I think the first post I read here was the one about flying to a conference of bankruptcy lawyers, which was very funny. I think it was called "Bankruptcy Ass." After that I went back and read all your posts, and have kept up (off and on) ever since. For a while, though, I thought you were in the *other* Portland, but I caught on eventually. Anyway, every time I stroll this way, you give me something to think about, and usually smile about, so thanks. Congrats on the marathon, by the way.
