So I am contemplating the Professor's suggestion that I just break down and buy a stupid TV. After all, Survivor season is upon us, which means required watching. Last night the football game went on way later than I anticipated and everyone at the Superbowl party I was at promptly vacated the party as soon as it was over, except my gracious but yawning host and a nice but sort of creepily insistent other guest who kept cajoling me to join him in the hot tub. I, of course, had to sort of ignore the social vibes coming from each of them and stick on the sofa for the premiere of Survivor. Hot tub guy eventually gave up and left, and my host went to bed himself, leaving me to turn off the lights and let myself out. I felt like I was a teenager babysitting or something, sitting alone in someone else's living room. It was pretty awkward.
I've gotten a couple of other invitations to watch the series at folks' houses. And last season I used to joke (presciently as it turns out) with Then-Boyfriend that no matter what happened with our relationship Housemate and I would be showing up at his place to watch Survivor All Stars in front of the fireplace. (I've since changed my mind about that plan.) Anyway going to someone else's place includes a sort of presumption of social intimacy. You can't just saunter in, turn on the tube, shush them if they talk during the show, and leave at the end of the episode if you feel like it. You can't exactly force them to tape it for you if for some reason something compelling keeps you away (or if you just like to be able to rewind and rehash the really juicy moments). I wish there were a bar in town, equivalent to a sports bar, where I could show up to watch Survivor, with friends or alone, but without the sense of imposition I get from being a guest in someone else's living room. I've been frequenting sports bars during this college basketball season and it's an interesting social study but for the most part I like it just fine -- food, drinks, TV, the opportunity but not the obligation to be social.
I don't particularly want a TV. I mean, they're not that expensive but they're cumbersome and ugly and I'd either have to find a place to put it (in the little den/study upstairs? NOT in the living room or chicken couch room or any of the pleasant downstairs rooms) or haul the damn thing up and down from the basement each time I want to use it. It will make my life marginally better for the next twelve weeks or whatever this is, but otherwise won't be much used.
Maybe I should find a small dive bar or a hotel bar that is generally deserted on Thursday nights and make friends with the bartender, see if I can work something out....
Silly Rabbit,
Its likely some of your friends genuinely mean their offers of TV availability. When watching with the proper type of friend, sauntered entries and post commercial hushings are not out of place.
Look hard. There is hope for you yet.

I suggest getting a nice TV. Not a stupid one. How about a modestly sized plasma LCD screen - expensive but stylish and small.

Far be it for me to question the good securities prof, but I think plasma and LCD are separate technologies, no? I'd go with the LCD -- just like a flat screen computer monitor.

Well, as one who offered, let it be known that talking is/will be kept to a minimum (and limited to ridicule) and you may leave immediately afterward with no regrets. Bring a beer or two, enjoy a tv that is several orders of magnitude too large (ill send you a picture...it is obscene) and leave whenever...I draw the line at making tapes for you...but there is a chance that we will be going for a DVR sometime soon after which I might be willing to record it *g*...best, i

Tung's right. Also a smart-aleck. This one's pretty stylish:

But LCD TVs are going to come down in price a lot over the course of this year. If you can stand waiting until after this season of Survivor, you'll pay a lot less for a better TV.
