I shall have a new desk. A partner here has a new table taking the place of his desk, so I've been selected as the recipient of his old desk. The office manager decided on her tour of the place that my office is the "homiest" and my desk is the "most well-loved" of all of the office furniture. She's right -- it's old and a little beat-up. But it's a warm wood and I like it. The new desk is a DARK DARK walnut and it's six inches wider, so it feels more ponderous, like the deck of an aircraft carrier. It also doesn't have a gap at the floor where the person across the desk can see my feet (and the slippers I keep under the desk and wear on those days I am very cold). Also there is at least one elephant sticker on my desk, that I should tell you was placed there by one of the office children but was actually placed there by me. I guess in all those ways it is far more respectable than my old desk. But it will change the distance between me and the person in the chair across from the desk and slightly alter the layout of the office and will look darker and more respectable and less warm and friendly.
Anyway I tried to politely decline the offer but it was decided that I shall have a new desk, and a new desk I shall have.
