I resigned from a board today, which was a hard decision but felt like the right one. I also went to a meeting of an "advisory board" for an organization a friend runs. It's mission and the population it serves are very different (HIV/STD treatment and prevention) than the board I left, and a kind of enlivening stretch outside of my comfort zone. Then a friend invited me to be on a different board (public access television station) that I don't think I'll do but again, stretched my imagination.
When I'm involved in an organization, especially a volunteer one, I'm nearly as interested in the people and the dynamic as I am in the substantive work of the organization. I'm noticing a greater call toward service right now than I've felt in a long time. And toward being stretched, being around people that aren't necessarily just like me.
