Woah! You even tell the story with a calm tone. I've flown on a few private planes and loved the experience. I know I wouldn't have reacted so calmly, if faced with a similar situation. I am very careful with whom I fly. I have a couple friends who have helicopters that have offered rides, but I just don't feel comfortable with my life in their hands. You are fortunate to have such a safe, experienced pilot/friend.
My questions is, How soon after the crash did the relationship end?

Sorry to turn this into an All Request, but 1) what was the final damage to the plane and do you know how much the repairs cost; and 2) learn anything about private aircraft insurance?
Ever hear the song "Plane Crash" by moe.?
Do I ever do any work? Rarely.

This is a great story, told calmly while holding us on a taut line. Ironic mix for the reader, making us feel it was important for us to trust this guy, relax, don't panic. Interesting.
Perhaps this is what my old writing teacher meant by her exhortation to put tension in every sentence.

Amazing story. Thanks so much for telling it!
So what I want to know is, did you ever go on another date with the pilot?
