Tom Mighell passed along the music meme to me. I don't usually take on these Internet propagated question games, but he caught me in an accomodating mood. I will, however, be cheating a bit, because I don't know some of the answers, and I don't like some of the questions.
The questions are:
1) What is the total volume of music you own?
2) What's the last CD you bought?
3) What song is playing right now?
4) What 5 songs do I listen to a lot?
5) What 5 people will I pose these questions to?
The answers (or revisions to the questions) are:
1) What is the total volume of music you own?
I don't know the answer to this question. I have a bunch of music on my old laptop (about 3500 songs), and a bunch of music on my new laptop (1933 songs), and there are songs on one laptop that aren't on the other, and vice versa, so I don't really know how much I've got. It's elusive. The old laptop controls my wireless stereo system, so that's what I can play in the house when I have parties. I have a bunch of CDs (four carrying cases) that I play in my car or on a boom box outside if I have outdoor parties, most of which is also on my laptop. I have kept two carrying cases of cassette tapes, of which hardly any of the music is on my laptops.
2) What's the last CD you bought?
I had to cheat to answer this question. I can't remember the last CD I bought, so I just now went online and bought the new CD by The Old Ceremony, who I know very little about. Django Haskins, the songwriter and lead singer for The Old Ceremony, was one of the people I really had fun hanging out with at my college reunion. It turns out he plays music with Thad Cockrell, who I really enjoy. And he's a neat guy, and the demo MP3 of The Old Ceremony sounds pretty good, in an Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire kind of swingy fun way.
Before that, I can't remember the last CD I bought. The last bit of music I paid money for was a $.99 iTunes download of the Rickie Lee Jones' song "Lucky Guy," back in February. I bought a John Denver CD last summer. That's sort of embarrassing, but I wanted to sing along to "Take Me Home, Country Road." I intended to buy a CD from The Howard Fishman Quartet when I saw them play at PopTech last fall, but Howard gave it to me for free. (It's very good, and he has a new one out that I'll be buying soon.) I have obtained a number of CDs since then -- a number fantastic mixes from friends, readers, bloggers. Just got in the mail a demo and a live CD of The Cuban Cowboys, who I mentioned on this blog way back when. The live CD especially makes me want to see them in concert -- great guitar, a real sense of fun, and a surprisingly sweet female vocalist who jumps in and slows things down after the boys get you too riled up.
I should be going to more live shows around here and buying more CDs from the artists. It's ridiculous that I can't remember the last time I did that.
3) What song is playing right now?
Right now, iTunes is serenading me with Jeff Buckley's Lover, You Should Have Come Over, which is one of the Great Songs. Next up is Radiohead's (Nice Dream).
In my car, I have the Cuban Cowboys' live CD in the CD player. But the voice of the female vocalist reminded me of Shivaree, and I wanted to check that association to see if I was right or way off base, so I dug out one of my old cassette tapes with Shivaree's I Oughta Give You A Shot In The Head For Making Me Live In A Dump Like This. And when I put the cassette in it went straight to side B, which is Marah's Let's Cut The Crap And Hook Up Later On Tonight. So in my car, I'm listening to Marah, and I'd forgotten how much I like them. Prior to popping in the Cuban Cowboys, I was enjoying a mix CD a friend made for me, with the Hole song Violet that I'd also forgotten I like.
4) What 5 songs do I listen to a lot?
It varies. I go through spells where I'm taken with a song or an album and it gets a lot of play until it's out of my system. The Old 97s, Whiskeytown, Johnny Cash, and Radiohead are currently being overplayed.
Songs that I listen to frequently:
1) Helpless by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (I sing this to my dog).
2) I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You by Willie Nelson (reminds me of my mom singing duet with my uncle way back when she used to be in the band with my dad and my uncle)
3) Bottomless Cup by The Jayhawks (no reason)
4) Revelator by Gillian Welch (no special reason)
5) Ghost by the Indigo Girls (I like to sing this with my roommate and we compete to see who can act out the histrionic lyrics the most dramatically and make the most agonized face while singing "There's not enough room in this world for my pain!")
5) What 5 people would I like to see answer these questions?
I'm cheating again, giving six people. Mr. Fun Ball, plus the last five bloggers who commented on my music posts: the Light, Turboglacier, Philanthropoid, Milbarge, and CM.
I am going to cheat even more than you by pretending I handed this on to you. ;-P
(Didn't want to obligate anyone at the time.)

Have you heard the Crash Test Dummies song "Afternoons and Coffeespoons"? It's my most-played iTune (partly from listening to it several times while writing a parody), and I was reminded of it by your Prufrock peach post.
