I've got enough people volunteered to help me this weekend, so that's a load off my mind. The prizes are all set; I'll pick them up tonight. Food and drink have been arranged. Today, an inventory of the RC boat to make sure all the equipment is ready to go: shotguns and shells, air horns, earplugs, compass, watch, working VHF radio, working GPS, up-to-date chart, anchors, marks, flags, compass, wind indicator.
I'm writing the sailing instructions right now, and learning a lot as I do so. I've read hundreds of sets of sailing instructions in my life, but composing them is still hard. It's like drafting a contract, taking on new meaning as I read each paragraph very carefully and think through how I want it to be applied, whether it gives rise to any ambiguities or grounds for protests, whether it imposes unreasonable burdens on the race committee or the sailors. I'm looking at examples of sailing instructions online and finding things to reject or incorporate in them.
Yesterday I spent a while on the all-important question of rum. We have some generous sponsorship from the local Mount Gay Rum distributor for the season, and were trying to figure out how many donated half-gallons to allocate to each regatta over the year, and how many additional half-gallons we would need to purchase given that allocation.
