Have you ever seen anything so preppy? I think not. This is a picture from the springtime, when we formally commissioned the yacht club for the season. The board is in our dress uniform, which I've written about before (but cannot link to right now, for technical reasons). I have mixed feelings about this silly tradition. On the one hand, I'm proud and moved to be a part of it; it's the place in the world where I feel happiest and most at home. On the other, well, all the brass buttons and pomp and circumstance strikes me as completely ridiculous. I turned up rap music very loud and nearly squealed my wheels when I was driving away after this event, because I felt it necessary to prove to myself that I'm not a stodgy old WASP. Someday maybe I'll be able to just love the damn club without feeling embarrassed or sheepish or ashamed of my loyalty.
I'm posting this actually as an experiment with flickr.com -- I was viewing the picture, which my dad took and uploaded to flickr, and noticed a "blog this photo" button, which is what I am testing out with this post.
Those skirts and pants certainly are...becoming. If there are space aliens monitoring Stay, I'm sure they'll be puzzled over the dress and customs of this particular tribe of seafarers.
