RE: men and exercise classes-- Richard Simmons totally ruined that for us.


I once enrolled in an exercise program marketed as a "boot camp," in which the instructor would push us to keep going, made us do extra push ups if we showed up late, and required us to be there before sunrise. By the end of the month, I probably was in my best shape since I stopped playing tennis in high school. I think I need minor abuse from another person to improve myself consistently.


I went to a yoga class with a girlfriend once. But since I didnt know how to do any of the moves, I had to look at the instructor all the time to see what to do. Unfortunately, I was seated at the back.

I enjoyed it, but havent been back since.


I think it's the same thing that prevents them from asking for directions - they like to figure things out themselves. And actually paying someone to tell you how to do something you already do is just unthinkable. Could be wrong...

Speaking for myself, I've always found the idea of excercise classes rather strange. I do fun activities, and I get exercise along the way as a bonus. So why would I take an excercise class, where the excercise is all I get?

Now, I can understand that the classes can have advantages of convenience and motivation. But overall, if guys can play basketball instead, or go biking with friends, I don't see passing on the excercise classes as all that weird.

What's always puzzled me are the aerobic martial arts classes. There was a quite well-subscribed class in Tai-Bo or some such at my college (all or nearly all women); basically it was aerobics that looked like kicks and punches. Meanwhile there were numerous real martial arts classes offered. Why take the former rather than the latter...?


I have just had a knee replacement and trying to find a work out to regain all my muscle tone. I have been working in the pool so far and it has helped in gaining my range of motion. But I am looking for a work out schedule and diet to help with building my leg muscles. It sure never took long to loose every bit of muscle I once had. The surgery part wasn't that bad, it's regaining the range of motion and muscle is the hard part. Thanks for your time, help and suggestions. Joe
