Bill Altreuter

I'd have to say, having visited the place only once, that Portland struck me as a very livable city. It impressed me as the sort of place it would be good to live in if you like being outdoors and active, which is a quality that probably attracts a lively population. It is also attractive, and has a brawny, hard-working feel to it that I found charming. There isn't anything fake about Portland.

It also seems to be a nice size-- assuming that it is more accepting of outsiders than the New England norm that I've encountered it seems like a place where one could move and quickly find a way to become involved and active.

Maybe the best part for me was the smell. I grew up on the water, and now, on the shores of the Great Lakes, I still miss the smell of salt in the air. Portland combines that with pine-- fabulous.
