You can stick with white wines and light bodied reds, or find friends who will indulge you with properly aged pinot noirs.

Is it the acid or the tannins that give some red wines a bitter aftertaste?

Daniel

Schez,

High acidity is much more of a problem in white wines than red wines. In red wines, believe it or not, you want an acidic wine because it generally picks up the flavors of a lot of the kinds of foods you're likely to be eating.

A lot of people who don't like red wine very much tend to prefer high-acid, low-tannin red wines, like Pinot Noirs, or, my own personal value favorite, Beaujolais.

Bill,

Too much tannins result in bitter aftertastes (even though tannic acid in general can be sensed much more through tactile sensations than taste). Leave a tea bag in a cup of tea for 15 minutes, then taste. That bitterness is tannic acid, just like wine.

The quality of a wine is not proportional to its price. We suggest you choose your wines according to your taste and to the occasion. It may sound obvious but many people simply take the bottle on offer and do not think much further.
